9/11-25th Anniversary

This year marks the quarter-century since the 2001 terrorist attack, reshaping American history and our lives today. On September 11th, 2001, two planes destroyed the Twin Towers, located in NYC. Thereafter, one hit the Pentagon outside of Washington D.C., and a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Students at St. Helen Catholic Academy will participate in a prayer memorial service dedicated to the heroes who fought to save others during this horrific event.

The event began on the morning of September 11th, when two terrorists-linked to al Qaeda- hijacked American planes. Al Qaeda is a global terrorist group founded by Osama bin Laden in the 1980s. The two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers of World Trade Center, causing their destruction. Consequently, nearly 3000 innocent civilians died: passengers on the plane, first responders, and people in the buildings. Following this tragedy, two more planes crashed into the Pentagon at Washington D.C. and a field in Pennsylvania.

St. Helen Catholic Academy firmly believes that young students should be taught more about the sacrificial heroes who gave up their lives for the sake of others. On the day of 9/11, we honor their bravery.

Not only did this catastrophe cause emotional pain, but many economic and health issues. Airports began implementing more security checks to prevent more attacks. The U.S. created the Department of Homeland Security, which was set up to protect the country from another event like this. Breathing in dust from the crash exposed hundreds of people to toxic chemicals, hurting their health. Many survivors still suffer from PTSD, cancer, and breathing disorders.

This year, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, our community wishes to teach the story of the courageous first-responders, survivors, and those who died to our students.
